La Grande Saline de Salins-les-Bains
Come admire a former salt production site that represents a living heritage and can only be uncovered with the heart.
The Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains is a place where a story is told. The story of men and women who over the course of 1200 years produced salt, a priceless resource that made Salins-les-Bains one of the most powerful towns in medieval Franche-Comté. The production shutdown in 1962 helped to preserve all the production tools needed to understand salt making in the Jura mountains. Today, there is a 165 meters long underground gallery designed in the image of a cathedral, a 19th century pump still in use and the last salt pan in France...
More than a visit, it's a true experience with enthusiastic guides about the history of a unique heritage in Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO list.
