To discover the Tarn-et-Garonne, is to dive in the heart of the orchard of the Southwest. From the wild shores of the Garonne and the Tarn de Montauban to Moissac, to the vertiginous cliffs of the Gorges de l'Aveyron, through the hills of Quercy and the hills of Lomagne, it is a territory with a thousand splendours.
The youngest department in France is unique in its diversity. True cradle of the best fruits, apples, plums, melons, strawberries, chasselas mark its landscapes. On foot, by bike or on horseback, this territory is the ideal ground for lovers of nature and slow tourism. Continue the gentle roaming along the Canal des Deux Mers, defy nature on the bike route of the Gorges de l'Aveyron, walk on the way to Santiago de Compostela.
Local specialties
The Tarn - & - Garonne, Orchard of the South - West.
The leading producer of apples in France, it has many fruits and other specialties in PDO and PGI. Among its flagship are all the varieties of apples, strawberries with unique flavors like the Gariguette and the Clary, the plum Reine-Claude, the melon of Quercy, the chasselas of Moissac ...
The foie gras, ambassador of the department
Long reserved for the princely tables, the foie gras has democratized but has lost nothing
Of its prestige. It remains the most emblematic food of French gastronomy.
Back to the sources of the terroir or virtuous interpretations, for the cooks and the chefs of the Tarn - Garonne, it remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
The truffle, the Quercy, the life ...
"Beware of those who do not like truffles, wine, or music," the proverb says.
Harvested from December to February, the black truffles of the Tarn - & - Garonne are sold all over the world by Maison Gaillard in Caussade, an unmissable address.
Saffron is back
In the Quercy, the cultivation of saffron dates back to the thirteenth century.
Today, in the markets of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Montalzat or Saint-Projet, local producers offer this spice with inimitable taste as well as derivatives, jams, syrups ...
The Chasselas of Moissac, the golden grain
The first fruit to have obtained the AOC in 1971, the Chasselas de Moissac is no longer just an exceptional table grape.
It is available today in fresh juices, carbonated juices, jams and alcoholic beverages. Thus was born the aperitif "Le Quercy des Iles" composed of golden chasselas, rum of Martinique, perfumed with the vanilla of Tahiti and stimulated by pepper of Espelette. L'Emoustilleur is also an essential aperitif, based on eau-de-vie in chasselas, excellent for finishing the meals smoothly.
The garlic of Lomagne, small terroir, great perfume!
Cultivated in Lomagne since the Middle Ages, garlic was renewed in the 1950s.
300 producers spread over 350 hectares cultivate a white aïl, with strong and woody fragrance, chosen companion of duck or foie gras.
Happy as a melon in Quercy
It needs sun, a lot of sunshine, and a clay-limestone soil like the one in the northern Tarn - Garonne. Under these conditions, it wants to become an exceptional fruit whose quality has been recognized since 2004 by a PGI.
