Maison du Souvenir
The 25th of August 1944 entered the history of France as a happy day : the liberation of Paris, symbol of the end of 4 years of occupation and humiliation. However, on that day, a small village in the south of the Indre et Loire, Maillé, was almost wiped off the map.124 inhabitants of the commune, about fifty of whom were massacred by German soldiers and the buildings of the town were Burned or destroyed by cannon fire.
For more than 50 years, the history of Maillé has been totally forgotten. In 2006, a House of Remembrance was created to make known this tragic event. Inaugurated officially in 2008 by the President of the Republic, this place of memory and history has welcomed nearly 50 000 visitors since its opening.
