Citadelle de Sisteron

Citadelle de Sisteron

At 500 m above sea level, La Citadelle de Sisteron overlooks the town of Sisteron - located in a passage between Dauphiné and Provence - and the Durance. Built on a rocky outcrop, this is the first thing you see when you arrive in the city. The citadel, with its fortifications, was a strategic lock on the road leading from the Alps to the Mediterranean. Classified as a historical monument, it is the centerpiece of the city. Jean Errard, Henri IV's military engineer, then Vauban marked it with their imprint.

Deeply wounded by the bombardment of August 1944, the Citadel is today admirably restored and invites you to visit.
