Château de Meillant

It is to the family of Amboise, and especially to Charles de Chaumont d'Amboise, governor of Italy, that we owe the transformation of the castle, begun in 1473.

On the facade, we find the talking weapons of Charles de Chaumont: Two "C" interlaced surmounting a mount inflamed for "Chaud Mont". Many owners subsequently succeeded, among them the Duke of Charost, creator of the Canal de Berry. While he was imprisoned in Bourges and then transferred to Paris to be guillotined, the population of Meillant and its surroundings demanded his release. All Berry had mobilized to get his return to the castle. This explains why the castle was not damaged during the revolution.

The castle was then inherited by the Rochechouart de Mortemart family, still occupying the castle today.
