Château fort de Coudray-Salbart

Vue d'ensemble du château de Coudray-Salbart

Come visit the Castle of Coudray Salbart, a remarkable military fortress built in the heart of the battles in the first half of the 13th century, between the Plantagenets (kings of England) and the Capetians (kings of France).

Admire the rich architecture : 14 rooms that were exceptionally preserved, including 12 arched rooms in a wide variety of architectural styles.

Explore an impressive defence system with a peripheral sheath (inner lane inside the curtain-walls) unique in Europe.

Uncover a mysterious story : construction began in 1202 but the first document describing this building dates back to 1460.

It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1952 and has been the primary focus of the Amis du Coudray Salbart (since 1961) and its new owner (since 2000) the Communauté d'Agglomération du Niortais.
