Marc Chagall. The light Passer
The exhibition explores the theme of light through Marc Chagall’s stained-glass windows, matching an important number of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings in order to rediscover an oeuvre which freely passes from one technique to another, from the profane to the sacred, from Judaism to Christianity, from collective history to the intimacy of the artist, between tradition and subversion. It sheds a light on the context of each commission and the artist’s close collaboration with the master glassmakers, by allowing a glimpse at the different stages of conception of a stained-glass window, from the first drawings to its integration into the architecture. Finally, it explains the manner in which Chagall used and transformed signs and symbols, in a humanist ideal of liberty and peace, and shows that the stained-glass window for the artist was a total art.
