Abbaye de Clairvaux
Further south, on the borders of the Aube and Haute-Marne, is l'Abbaye de Clairvaux, a classical masterpiece begun in the 12th century, when the famous Bernard of Clairvaux and some of his companions Sent by Etienne Harding, abbot of Cîteaux, to set up a Cistercian community in this part of Champagne. It was therefore in 1115 that this "major daughter" of the Order of Cîteaux was established. In the heart of the Aube forest, l'Abbaye de Clairvaux groups its majestic buildings around the cloister. Even today visitors can admire the Hostellerie des Dames, the children's prison chapel, the laundrette of the monks, the surrounding wall, the barn or the large cloister of classical architecture.
